Would like to meet...

Question

I'm a young gay guy and I want to meet other young gay people. The problem is I'm not a student so can't access those sorts of gay student groups. Where would be a good place to start? I feel like I'm missing out because I'm not a student.

Answer

It's clear that you're switched on to your sexuality, and keen to get the most out of life. But don't worry; there are options out there that aren't based around student life.

Please don't think that you're missing out on an opportunity by not being a student. It's true that student life introduces you to a variety of interests, groups and events, but with a little effort you can make the same contacts on your own terms. The key is in being relaxed about what makes you tick, and interested in others. It's important you know that you can't go wrong by simply being sociable, if you can be yourself in social situations, and fun to be around, people will soon start paying attention to you for all the right reasons.

As for getting in touch with like-minded people, there are several nationwide lifestyle magazines aimed at young gay men, as well as websites that can help to keep you informed of events, news and forums, like uk.gay.com and Gay Youth UK. On a local level, check your regional paper for listings of events that might interest you.

Finally, remember you don't need to limit yourself to meeting people on the gay scene. You might find you meet the man of your dreams just walking down the street, in the cinema or pub. It really is just a question of being yourself at all times.
