Question

How can I know for sure my boyfriend is telling the truth when he says he loves me?

Answer

Love is a funny thing. Sometimes it's hard to know if you really and truly love someone. You might have butterflies in your stomach at the mere sight of your beloved, or you might feel elated, or sometimes even downright queasy, whenever the object of your affection passes by. It's even harder to know if someone else loves you, unless, of course, they tell you outright.

You didn't give much information regarding the relationship you have with your boyfriend. For instance, have you known him for quite a while or just for a short amount of time? Do you regularly hang out together or do you only get to see each other once in a while? The reason for the questions is to see if: a) your relationship is intense or casual; and b) you really know and trust each other.

If the relationship is casual and a guy says he loves you, it's hard to know if his proclamation of love is honest or not. For instance, some people say 'I love you' early on in a relationship and really mean it. Others say it because they feel as if it is expected of them, or sometimes they are eager to enter into a sexual relationship and think that an 'I love you' is enough to seal the deal. It depends on the nature of the relationship, and it depends on the individual. Because you didn't give details about your specific situation, it's hard to advise you one way or another.

It might help to trust your own instincts. If your boyfriend has been open and honest up to this point, chances are you can trust what he's saying. Otherwise, you might want to exercise some caution and proceed carefully. In other words, don't leap into the relationship blindly. Give it some time to develop, spend more time together, and see what happens. The answer will most likely become crystal clear.
