Looking for a lift
Question
Basically, I'm really depressed. It keeps coming back and I just don't understand why. I don't care about anything; my life or my future. Who should I go to for help?
Answer
By contacting us you've taken a big step, the fact you're willing to seek help actually suggests you do care about your life. Depression can be very debilitating and isolating but, please be reassured, you're not alone.
You don't say whether you've spoken to your local doctor (GP) about your feelings. If the depression keeps on reoccurring you might want to consider getting a professional diagnosis. There are a number of ways of treating depression, both with and without medication, and your GP will be able to discuss the medical and talking treatment options available. Your GP should also be able to refer you on to an appropriate counselling service or you could try contacting the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) if you wished to seek this form of help independently.
If you feel uncomfortable discussing any of this with your doctor, there are other organisations and support groups that can also help you through this difficult time. Depression Alliance provides advice and support to those affected by depression. Their website is full of useful information, publications, access to a national network of self-help groups and a pen friend scheme.
Sometimes, opening up to family and friends about your depression can help too. It's understandable that some people prefer to keep things from those they're close to for fear of upsetting them but often, once people know the situation, they are able to offer help and support.
If you would prefer taking to someone you don't know on the phone, you might like to call the MindinfoLine on 0845 766 0163. They can provide information and signposting. Or, for emotional support and practical information you can talk, in confidence, to SANELINE on 0845 767 8000.
