What are the legal consequences of selling, giving, delivering, possessing or using crystal meth?
Answer
Crystal meth is a powerful stimulant and part of the amphetamine family. The Misuse of Drugs Act sets out the laws that control drug use and defines penalties according to drug classification.
UK drug laws focus on penalties for possession and dealing. Drugs are defined as Class A, B or C and each classification has a different penalty. Those related to Class A substances are generally the most severe.
At present crystal meth in smokeable form is a Class B substance but if it is prepared for injection it becomes a Class A substance (as is the case with amphetamines). It's also worth noting that moves are afoot to upgrade all forms of crystal meth to a Class A drug. Drug laws are enforced and each local area has a strategy for tackling drug-related crime, including dealing and possession.
